Considering Family Therapy?

Strengthen the Family Bond With Therapy.

If your family feels disengaged, disconnected, or has difficulty communicating or understanding each other, we’d love to help.

The Liz Davis Therapy (LDT) team works primarily with adult families of all backgrounds and provides a safe therapeutic space to process your family's difficulties.

We specialize in healing relationships between adult children and one or both parents or step-parents. Additionally, we can individually coach parents to help them learn how to best love and connect with their adult children in and out of session.

We also work with families who want a safe place where, with our gentle guidance, they can speak more freely and authentically with one another about what is on their hearts and minds without fear of judgment or reactivity.

Family therapy is an opportunity to go deeper than the “What’s new in your life?” or “How are you?” conversations.

Let’s get below surface level. Let’s really talk. We like to foster a safe environment for more meaningful and emotional engagement with one another. Let’s talk through the hard stuff, process the past, and create a plan for how your family can heal and have a more unified, joyful, and connective future together.

Many of us want to be “closer” to our family members, but what does that even mean? We will help you redefine what connection and love look like in your family unit. Let’s work together to rebuild love, compassion, and healthy communication.

  • Yes, we offer individual coaching to parents, assisting them in learning how to best love and connect with their adult children both during sessions and in their day-to-day lives. For adult family therapy client systems, we offer free weekly 15-minute calls for parents desiring additional support through the therapy process, and unlimited email support to all family members between sessions. The free 15-minute phone calls for parents are because family therapy, in all of my experience, has made the biggest emotional asks of parents. The amount of humility and emotional space they need to hold to hear their adult children’s thoughts, feelings, pain, and perspective is immense and can be emotionally taxing. I want to offer additional support for parents so that they can show up as their best, most supportive selves for their adult children without defensiveness getting in the way of healing.

  • The duration of therapy varies based on the unique needs of each family. We'll work together to determine the most effective and efficient approach for your situation.

  • It's not uncommon for resistance to exist initially. We approach this with understanding and work collaboratively to create a comfortable space where everyone feels heard and respected. It’s our experience that as the family members get to know their clinician as a person, they build trust and connection over time. Our clinicians bring their authentic self into therapy sessions, in addition to years of clinical experience and training, so you’re not just getting a trained therapist - you’re getting a compassionate, empathetic, and relatable human being to help your family navigate whatever issues you’re facing.

  • Family therapy can provide immediate support, especially in crisis situations. The process is adaptable, and we'll work together to address urgent needs while also developing a plan for long-term growth and healing. While family therapy in general is helpful for crisis situations, we caution new family system clients that as private practice clinicians, we do not singularly have the resources to provide crisis care in between sessions. We can schedule phone calls and respond to emails; however, we are typically unavailable by phone, text, or email during afternoon and evening hours, as we are in session, and we are also unavailable over the weekend.

  • Family therapy benefits children by providing a supportive environment to express their thoughts and feelings. The appropriate age for inclusion varies, and family therapists assess each situation individually, ensuring that children feel comfortable and can actively participate in the therapeutic process. While we have worked with families with children and adolescents in our graduate school clinical internships, in our private practice we have chosen to only work with adult families.
