New to Therapy?
Here’s What to Expect.
What to Expect from Your First Therapy Session.
01 — Before Your First Appointment.
First thing is to click the Schedule an Appointment button. From there, you can pick a therapist. For Liz and Lynee, you can choose a day and time that works for you. We will email you to confirm the appointment. For Harry, you will schedule directly with him via email or phone.
Then, we will add you into SimplePractice, the secure scheduling software we use for scheduling, billing, and storing paperwork. SimplePractice will email you the intake paperwork that you should complete online at least 24 hours prior to your first session. It takes just a bit of time, but it saves more time in session to just get to know each other instead of doing boring paperwork.
Add the appointment to your personal calendar and get excited! You’ll also receive a text and email reminder from SimplePractice two days prior to your appointment, just in case you’re as forgetful as we can be!
02 — Where to Go
You’ll arrive at Liz Davis Therapy Group Practice, located at 4116 Baltimore Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111. It’s a little yellow/orange building that looks like a house. Parking is on the street in front of the building, or in the parking behind the building accessible from 41st Street. The six “reserved” parking spots in the back of the parking lot are all for Liz Davis Therapy Group Practice clinicians and clients. You can also park in any of the other spots not marked as “reserved”.
Enter in the front door, walk straight through the entryway, and you’ll see a waiting room with a couch and chairs. Feel free to grab a water, have a seat, and get comfortable. Your therapist will come get you approximately two minutes before your scheduled appointment time.
If you need it, the restroom is up the stairs when you walk in. It’s the first door straight ahead at the top of the stairs with a “Restroom” sign on it, and the door is always open unless occupied.
03 — In Our First Appointment
Since your intake paperwork will already be completed online prior to the appointment, we’ll just spend about 10 minutes going over the highlights of the paperwork and answering any questions you may have about us, therapy, fees/scheduling, or anything else.
We will then ask you some questions about what brings you to therapy. This is your turn to talk, and we’ll just listen.
We may ask you some questions to better understand your background and history. This is the first step to getting to know you, and you can also get to know our styles as well! We may ask about your family, your past, or what brings you to therapy now. There are no wrong answers. Just relax and be yourself!
We will check in with you in the last ten minutes of the session to see what you think about the first session and see how you’re feeling. We will ask if you think we’re a good fit. If so, we can continue to work together and schedule your next appointment. Your card will be automatically charged in SimplePractice at midnight at the end of the day.
If you’re not so sure that we’re the best person to help you, that is totally ok too! You are welcome to let us know that! We will email you within a week with at least one referral for another highly qualified therapist who may be a better fit for you. We only refer therapists we know and trust in their work.
04 — After Your First Appointment
Be gentle with yourself. Therapy can be cathartic, but it can also take a lot out of you emotionally. If possible, give yourself time and space after our session to process the experience on your own or with a safe person.
If you have decided we are a good fit, access your SimplePractice Client Portal online to schedule another appointment. We’d love to see you again and continue the healing journey!
If you have decided we are not a good fit, you’ll receive an email from us within a week with at least one referral name for another qualified therapist.
